Textured Wall & Ceiling Plaster Restoration & Painting

Posted by Anthony Giangrossi Jan 20 2016

Textured walls or ceilings can be very difficult to work with. Specifically when it come to matching the existing texture after the restoration is complete. The walls and ceilings of this home were done with a textured plaster. Over the years both surfaces were starting to show a lot of cracks that eventually lead to complete separation of the plaster creating holes in the walls and ceilings. All of those areas (about 25 for this room) needed to be scraped out to the base of the wood lattice.

BEFORE:

Once that was complete a base coat of plaster was applied to each area. Once the base coat dried mesh taping was applied to each crack followed by a top coat of textured plaster to match the existing texture. It took three days to complete the preparation of the walls and ceiling so the plaster could dry and cure properly before priming and painting.

The homeowner wanted a soft / light blue gray for the walls to complement the large area rug in the room. With it being such a big space I recommend going a bit deeper / bolder with the wall color to pull out more of the colors in the rug and to prevent the color from being washed out from the natural light. As you can see from the picture we sampled many (6) blue gray colors. We finally decided on Benjamin Moore HC-153, Marlboro Blue which was two full shades darker than she originally wanted. She was so excited to see the finish results and absolutely loves the color and restored condition of the walls and ceiling.

Wall Striping of a Kid’s Bedroom with Bright Colors

Posted by Anthony Giangrossi Jan 13 2016

What to do when your kids ask you to paint their bedroom? You help them pick out a color and you paint the walls. Well, what happens when between your two kids they have 10 “favorite” colors and want to paint their walls with all of them? First reaction is to laugh and then second is to figure out a way to incorporate as many colors as possible.

My idea was to stripe the walls and ceiling with 4-5 colors along with a base color for the walls. We were able to narrow down the colors to six and decided on Behr Island Oasis eggshell finish as the base color for the walls. The striping colors are as follows:

Yellow: Behr – Bonjour – semi-gloss finish.
Blue: Behr – Lapis Lazuli – semi-gloss finish.
Orange: Behr – Tart Orange – semi-gloss finish.
Purple: Behr – Dynamic Magenta – flat finish.
Green: Behr – Eagle’s Mark – flat finish.

The decision was made to have different finishes for the colors to provide additional depth other than just the colors themselves. All of the colors were matched in Benjamin Moore Natura that provides minimal odor and VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

The application of two coats of the base color took four hours. The measuring, taping and painting of the five stripe colors took me 13 hours to complete. The end result is a very happy 6 and 3 year old who love sleeping under the “rainbow” each night 🙂

The next blog will be about textured wall and ceiling plaster restoration and painting.

Kitchen Cabinet & Wall Restoration & Painting

Posted by Anthony Giangrossi Jan 03 2016

The decision to replace or paint kitchen cabinets can be a very difficult since you don’t know what the finished painted product will look like. That’s why it’s important to contact a professional painting contractor that specializes in cabinet painting.

The homeowner of the below kitchen planned to replace the counter tops, back splash and flooring along with updating the appliances. She remained undecided about replacing the cabinets due to cost and was unsure about painting due to the condition of the cabinets. She contacted me for an appointment to look at the cabinets so I could provide my professional recommendation if I thought the cabinets could be restored and painted to look new and save the cost of completely replacing. The cabinets were in average condition and I recommended they be painted at a significantly lower cost than replacing.

We removed all of the doors and drawers from the base of the cabinets to prep for priming and painting. All existing hardware was removed and replaced with new. All of the cabinet surfaces were sanded with 120cc sand paper to completely remove the top layer of polyurethane and stain. After that all surfaces were cleaned with wet rags (no cleaner) to prepare for priming. One coat of Fine Paints of Europe Hollandlac primer was applied to all surfaces. After the primer dried (8 hours as it’s oil based) all imperfections were filled with wood filler or caulk. After both dried all surfaces were sanded and cleaned again.

Now that preparation was complete all surfaces had two coats of Fine Paints of Europe Hollandlac White Brilliant finish applied with foam rollers to provide a factory sprayed finished look. Dry time between coats is 14-16 hours as the product is an oil-based enamel. After the paint was dried the new hardware was installed and cabinets reassembled. Attention to detail is very important when using the Hollandlac product since it’s an oil-based enamel and does not apply, set or dry like other oil-based products.

The walls has wall paper on there from the 1950s that was a bit challenging to remove. Once the wall paper and glue were removed the walls were sanded (to remove excess glue), cleaned, primed, patched, sanded again and cleaned again to ready for painting. The homeowner at first wanted to paint the walls a light gray to match the counter tops and flooring. My suggestion was to think outside the box since there was already so much gray in the space. I suggested red as I thought it would look great with white cabinets, white back splash and black appliances. She was open to red so we sampled four Benjamin Moore reds and decided on Heritage Red in the Benjamin Moore Kitchen & Bath satin finish.

The end result was she and the entire family loved the red walls and painted cabinets. She was so happy to not have to spend the additional money to completely replace the cabinets. Overall the end result looks great and the homeowner is very happy.
