Bathroom Colors: Neutral, Bright or Bold

Posted by Anthony Giangrossi Feb 24 2016

Homeowners ask me quite a bit to recommend a room in the house to explore with color. Typically I suggest a bathroom as it can be a fun place to add a splash of color. Typically they are small spaces that you can personalize where choosing bright or bold colors can be a fun idea. If you happen to not like the color you chose it’s easy enough to repaint the space with a neutral color.  Below are three article once again from the wonderful contributors at Houzz on how to use bold, bright and neutral colors in a bathroom.

The first link is how to use bold colors in a bathroom. My favorite is Benjamin Moore Day Spa:

The second link is how to use bright colors (yellows) in a bathroom to add a splash of color. I love the idea of the yellow cabinets and painting the interior of the drawers yellow:

If you can’t draw yourself to add a bold or bright color to your bathroom the below link is on how to use neutral colors (white) in different ways in the bathroom. I like the textured pattern on the walls.

Hopefully our friends at Houzz were able to help you move outside your comfort zone and add a splash of color to your bathroom. If not then provide some different ideas on how in incorporate white.

The color trend for interior painting in 2016 is white, white and some more white 🙂 Well, what if you don’t like white walls, ceilings or trim. Or you like some white but not all surfaces. How about trying the complete opposite….black. I know the color black is a very scary thought when thinking about painting the interior of your home. Below are three articles from the wonderful contributors at HOUZZ regarding when and why to paint your walls, ceilings and doors black.

How to Choose Colors for Your Interior Painting Project

Posted by Anthony Giangrossi Feb 10 2016

There are many aspects a homeowner needs to consider when hiring a professional painting contractor for their interior painting project. There are too many aspects to list them all in this post. They are all noted in my interior guideline that can be read by clicking on the guide button below. What is not listed in the guideline is the color consultation / selection process. During my initial meeting with a homeowner the number one concern I hear is how difficult and stressful it is to choose the correct colors to complement the current furniture, accessories, flooring, rugs, pictures. etc. Also, if only select rooms are being painted those new colors need to complement the existing colors of the house.

After working through the color consultation process for many years with homeowners I have take their feedback and developed a very simple way to choose the correct colors for one room or the entire house. Below is the order I follow during the color selection process to help a homeowner choose the colors for their interior project.

1. Determine the style you are trying to achieve in your home. Contemporary, traditional, modern, country French, etc.

2. Choose one paint manufacture (Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, C2, etc). There are hundreds to choose from which leads to tens of thousands of colors. By choosing one type of paint manufacture this will immediately narrow down the colors by thousands.

3. Once the paint manufacture is selected the next step is to narrow down the color choices within that product. Most paint manufactures have multiple color charts that consist of thousands of colors. Knowing the style of the home allows me to choose one color chart which narrows down the colors from thousands to hundreds.

4. Choose a color family for each room. Gray, beige, blue, white, etc… Once I know what color family the homeowner prefers this allows me to start making some specific color suggestions. Now we’re down to less than a hundred colors in that specific color chart.

5. Narrow down the specific colors for each room to 2-3.

6. Purchase samples of the specific colors for each room and apply to the walls.

7. Have a conversation with the homeowner to get their feedback on the colors. Then choose the correct color for each room and get ready to transform your home with the new colors.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions regarding the color consultation process.

Fireplace Restoration Process: Before, During & After

Posted by Anthony Giangrossi Feb 03 2016

The homeowner contacted us for our restoration services as the walls and ceilings the dining room, sunroom, living room, entrance and fireplace mantel in the living room needed some TLC. Many of the wall corner joints had failed along with the wall to ceiling joints due to age in all of the rooms. All of those area were repaired by removing the failed joints, application of USG Structo-Lite base coat plaster since many of the holes along the joints were deep, applying new corner joints, one coat of Durabond and two top skim coats of 3M easy sand joint compound before priming and painting. All of the walls were painted in an off white, Benjamin Moore Mountain Peak White (2148-70).

FP1
Since all of the walls were a soft off white she really wanted to highlight the fireplace mantel in the living room with two colors if we could restore the brick/plaster and wood. As you can see from the pictures the brick/plaster was in really bad condition. The damaged areas had at one time been repaired as the failed areas were plaster patch and not brick. The decision was made to build up the damaged areas with the same base coat plaster patch we used on the walls since it provides a rock hard texture finish. To get the texture of the plaster patch to match the existing texture of the brick we rolled the patched with a 1/2″ nap about half way (3 hours) through the drying process to add additional texture. After the patch was dried we scraped and lightly sanded the patch to shape it to match the texture of the brick so when painted it provided a uniform finish.

FP2
After the brick was restored we focused on the top of mantel as the wood had completely split. We scraped out the damaged wood and filled the crack with Abatron two part wood epoxy. Mix equal parts A & B, mold to fit the crack and let it dry for 12 hours. After completely dried the epoxy was power sanded to smooth out and match the wood.

FP3
Before applying the paint all of the repaired areas were primed with Mad Dog Crack Fix. The homeowner wanted a bluish gray for the wood and greenish gray for the brick to work with the picture above the fireplace and accent pieces. The brick was painted with Benjamin Moore Knoxville Gray, HC-160 and the wood was painted with Benjamin Moore Jamestown Blue, HC-148.

FP4

She absolutely loves the restored look of the fireplace and is happy to now showcase it in her living room.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions regarding the restoration process.
