2015 Interior Paint Colors of the Year

So many interior paint colors and paint companies to choose from. Which interior paint color is correct?  Which paint product is correct for your project? The process of choosing the correct color for each room of your home can easily go from fun to very stressful. In this blog, I’m going to provide you with eight different paint companies with their 2015 interior paint colors of the year that will hopefully make your color decision making process easier.

The below five colors are for paint companies that you will find at your local paint store:

  1. Benjamin Moore – Guilford Green
  2. Sherwin Williams – Coral Reef
  3. Pratt & Lamber – Noir
  4. Pittsburgh Paint – Blue Paisley
  5. Fine Paints of Europe – Sapphire

The below three colors are for paint companies that you will find at most any big box store:

  1. Dutch Boy – Coral Blue
  2. Glidden – Caribbean Sea
  3. Behr – Essential Teal

Interior Stain Products for Water Damage Restoration: Trim & Windows

It’s a bit more difficult to determine if stained floor trim, door frames, doors, window or windows frames have water damage. Water damage on stained surfaces are not immediately present like painted trim surfaces. When painted surfaces have water damage, the paint will bubble, flake off or show discoloration. None of those are immediately noticeable on stained surfaces. You will notice some discoloration (graying or browning) over time but by then the wood might be rotten and would need to be replaced.

To avoid rotten wood due to water damage look for areas on the stained surfaces where the sealant / polyurethane has started to flake, bubble up a bit or separate from the stained surface. This is a sign there might be an area around that surface that is leaking water. Inspect the area to identify the leak, repair the leak and then restore the wood.

The following process will restore stained surface due to water damage:

  1. Completely remove the existing sealant / polyurethane with a chemical remover.  Wear protective gloves.
  2. Sand the stained wood surface with 100cc sand paper to remove or level out the existing stain. If you are unable to remove the stain with sanding use the chemical remover.
  3. Clean with a tack cloth.
  4. Stain with one or two coats depending on stain depth preference.
  5. Apply one coat of sanding sealer.
  6. Apply two coats of sealant / polyurethane.

Drying time between coats if using an acrylic based products is typically between 3-4 hours. If using oil-based products the drying time between coats is typically 18-24 hours.

Interior Paint Products for Water Damage Restoration: Trim & Windows

How to determine if there is moisture / water damage along the floor trim, bottom of door frames and doors themselves is similar to drywall. You want to look for bubbling / pealing paint, yellow / brownish discoloration or small black spots (mold) along the specific surface. If you notice any of those indicators that is a sure sign there is water damage and restoration is necessary. I highly recommend to remove the necessary trim to check the drywall behind to access that water damage to the drywall or plaster. If you notice any of the above indicators the drywall or plaster should be removed, new installed along with new trim.
If the trim is showing minimal bubbling / pealing paint and slight discoloration the paint can be scraped, sanded or completely removed from the trim area showing the water damage. After the preparation is complete there are some wonderful interior paint products for trim, windows or doors in need of water damage restoration. One of the best primers on the market to block the discoloration and seal the surface is Zinisser BIN interior oil primer. Here is a link for that product:
After the priming of the trim is complete I highly recommend a paint product by Benjamin Moore called Advance. Here is a link for that product:
The key in the water damage restoration is to identify the extent of the water damage. If like the above picture, completely remove all of the damaged areas and replace with new. If the water damage is minimal it’s very important to prep the surface correctly and prime with the primer noted above or similar. Do not use a latex based primer as it will not provide the necessary stain blocking elements.

Interior Paint Products for Water Damage Restoration: Walls & Ceilings

An indication of water damage to walls or ceilings due to a leaking pipe or foundation leak is bubbling paint or yellowish/brownish coloring. If you notice areas like this poke or drill a hole in the damaged drywall areas to see if any water drains. If so, there is most likely insulation behind that drywall which is saturated with water that will need to be replaced. The water damaged drywall area will need to be cut out, insulation removed and new of both installed. If the wet insulation is not removed it will continue to seep water into the drywall causing the problem to continue and develop mold.

If you notice small black dots on the surface of the drywall that is an indication of mold and all of the drywall and insulation will need to be removed regardless of water damaged to completely rid the space of the mold. If any of the wood structure behind the drywall has mold (black spots) make sure to clean with bleach to remove before installing the new drywall and insulation.

If the area does not have insulation and is just showing some bubbling and light discoloration, that area can be scraped to remove the failed paint, prepped, primed/sealed and painted. Primer and sealer interior paint products for water damage restoration are more important than the paint. The primer or sealer will provide the necessary stain blocking elements to prevent any future discoloration caused by the existing water damage. Interior Paint Products for Specific Surfaces: Trim, Door, Windows

The key to selecting the correct interior paint products for specific surfaces like trim, windows and doors is knowing what the correct product is on the surfaces. If the surface has been previously painted with an latex based product it’s safe to re-coat with another latex or alkyd (oil-based) product. It’s important to do the necessary preparation (scraping, patching, sanding, cleaning and caulking) before applying the new paint product.

If the surfaces have been previously painted with an alkyd (oil-based) product it is very important to re-coat with another alkyd product or waterborne alkyd paint. If a latex based paint is applied over a surface that has been previously painted with an alkyd paint it will chip and flake off easily as the chemical makeup of the two different products does not allow proper adhesion even with the correct preparation listed above.

This link is for Advance, which is a Benjamin Moore product that is a waterborne alkyd paint and can be applied directly to surfaces previously painted with an alkyd paint after the correct preparation. Benjamin Moore developed this product after the EPA regulations were passed April, 2010:

If you are making the decision to paint over any of the above mentioned surfaces that has been previously stained all of the above products can be used.
